Concerned About the Economy?
SCORE, America's Counselors to Small Business,  has partnered with Capital One Bank  and  METRO Solutions Communities in Motion to provide a series of workshops that are open to all business owners, but particularly focused upon the needs of East End businesses and residents. These informational sessions will explore ways that local businesses and residents can benefit from the East End METRO light-rail line.  You will learn how to, not only survive, but thrive, during these tough economic times.
SCORE counselors, along with our partners, will discuss the importance of updating your business plan, focusing on your customers and managing your finances with prudence so you might be better able to get funding, even in this tight credit market.
You will have an opportunity to meet, one-on-one, with SCORE counselors and our Partners, especially lenders of alternate financing, to discuss your unique situation and network with other small businesses who are facing similar challenges.

The Why, What, When, Where, Who and How of Business Success
Ask Why?
Before you start a business, ask yourself why.  As the owner of a small business, be aware that in the beginning you will work twice as hard, for half the pay you're accustomed to earning as an employee.  Also be aware that you will be taking a substantial financial risk.  Start that business only when you have a real passion for what you will be doing, and want to create a company of which you will be proud. The startup price will be high.  Be sure that you are ready to pay the price, in order to achieve the end result that you highly prize.  Then, as their leader, inspire your people with a clear vision of where the company is going and how you plan to get there.
When you know Why...
Ask What? When?  Where? Who? and How?
Counselor Spotlight
Peter van Hoeven
SCORE Business Counselor
Peter van Hoeven's depth of business knowledge, and long years of experience, has inspired some of his SCORE clients to think of him as "Peter the Great".  Please pardon the superlatives.  When a counselor helps small business owners make more money, they tend to get excited.
With an MBA degree from Southern Methodist University and a CPA license from the State of Texas, Peter knows numbers.  He has more than 12 years experience as a Senior Manager with the international accounting firm, Arthur Andersen.  In addition, Peter has been the Manager of Planning and Internal Audits with a major oilfield services company here in Houston, and was also the CFO for a 100 million dollar Houston construction management company.
Most recently, Peter has been involved in both marketing and financial consulting to small business owners in the Houston area, and became a SCORE Counselor last January.
If you need someone to take you by the hand and lead you through the intricacies of a business plan, budgeting, cash flow statement or any of those other financial documents that most small business owners don't understand all that well, Peter van Hoeven is your man!
Toss in the fact that, like all SCORE counselors, his services are absolutely free of charge, and Peter just might be the greatest bargain in Houston.  He's available each Friday at the SCORE Central Office, 8701 South Gessner, just off the Southwest Freeway.  No appointment is necessary.
